La Cueva

project description

Working with the Mission Office at the Diocese of Orlando, mr2 architecture has designed this 1,000 square foot chapel for the town of La Cueva in the Dominican Republic. The two principals at mr2 have made it a priority to dedicate a portion of their time to giving back to the international community. This chapel will help the people of La Cueva grow together physically and spiritually. The main façade is defined with a simple portico designed with a vertical trellis and a subtle cross above that is reflected within a circular stained glass window. The stone wainscot surrounding the exterior of the church provides a strong aesthetic base. It is quarried from the adjacent mountains and helps reinforce the chapel's indigenous connection to the community.
